In Feng Shui, the main door (大门) is known as the “mouth of Qi” — it’s where energy enters your home and life. Just like breathing clean air affects your body, clean, vibrant Qi entering your home supports your finances, wellbeing, and stability.

If you’re rebuilding your landed home, your main door placement and direction are one of the most important Feng Shui decisions you’ll make.

Here’s how to get it right — without needing to be a Feng Shui master*.

1. Why Main Door Placement Matters

Think of your main door as a Qi gateway:

  • Good placement = steady flow of opportunities, health, and harmony

  • Bad placement = blocked career, financial loss, tension in relationships

A well-placed door:

  • Faces a direction compatible with your BaZi or Kua number

  • Avoids incoming “sha qi” (cutting energy)

  • Is well lit, clean, and grounded

A poorly placed door can lead to:

  • Health setbacks, especially for breadwinners

  • Frequent disputes in the household

  • Financial drains (unexpected expenses, debt)

2. Best Directions for Main Doors in Period 9 (2024–2043)

Depending on the house orientation and Flying Stars, some directions are more auspicious now:

Direction

Benefits in Period 9

South

Ruled by Star 9 (Fire) — prosperity, visibility, reputation

East

Wood feeds Fire — growth, health, and rising income

Northwest

Mentorship, nobleman luck, patriarchal support

Northeast

Good for learning, children, and spiritual clarity

Watch out for:

  • Southwest or West doors with illness stars (2, 5) — use metal cures

  • T-junctions, sharp corners, or pillar-aligned doors — they cause cutting Qi

3. Main Door Do’s and Don’ts (Design Edition)

DO:

  • Position door so it opens inward — invites Qi

  • Create a foyer (玄关) to slow and guide energy flow

  • Elevate the door above ground level for rising Qi

  • Place auspicious symbols (五帝钱, crystal ball, welcome mat)

DON’T:

  • Align directly with the back door, staircase, or large windows (Qi escapes)

  • Place the main door facing a lift shaft, sharp corner, or directly at a lamppost

  • Use mirrors facing the door — it pushes Qi away

4. What Size Should the Door Be?

Main door size should be proportional to the house and not too narrow or oversized.

Common guideline (based on landed home scale):

  • Single door: ~900mm to 1100mm wide

  • Double door: ~1.8m total width (with fixed panel or active leaf)

From 《鲁班经》 (The Luban Classic):

Use auspicious height ranges like 2,118mm, 2,254mm, or 2,560mm where possible.

5. Enhancements to Attract Wealth and Stability

Strategic enhancements around the main door can reinforce good energy:

Item

Purpose

五帝钱 (Five Emperor Coins)

Embedded at the threshold to guard and attract wealth

Paired plants

Symbolize life and prosperity — choose round-leaf varieties

Auspicious door mat

In red or Earth tone; choose wording like “迎福” or “招财”

玄关灯 (Foyer light)

Keeps the area “yang” and energetic

Nameplate or plaque

Strengthens presence and social luck (especially for business owners)

6. What to Avoid in the Path Leading to Your Door

Before Qi even reaches your door, the path matters:

  • Avoid: long narrow corridors, dead-end paths, sharp turns

  • Enhance: curved paths, stone steps, or a gentle slope up

  • Ensure: no drains or grates cutting across the front threshold

Drain running across the entrance = money draining from the house.

7. BaZi Compatibility: Personalizing the Door Direction

To fully optimize your main door, align it with the homeowner’s BaZi Daymaster or Kua number.

For example:

  • Avoid clashes with the “Year Breaker” direction of the year you move in

Want to be extra precise? Have your Feng Shui master calculate:

  • Flying Star + Eight Mansions + your BaZi compatibility

  • Best dates for installing or activating the door

Building for the Next 20 Years

Your main door is more than a physical entry point — it’s an energetic decision that supports or suppresses your future progress. In Period 9, where visibility, speed, and digital expansion dominate, your door’s placement could shape more than just your floor plan.
